Florida Panhandle Shipwrecks Trail

Underwater Cinematography, 360° Underwater VR Filming

These 360 underwater VR experiences were produced for the Florida Bureau of Archeological Research in order to promote ecological awareness in the Florida panhandle after the fallout from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The project immerses audiences in the ecosystems that grow from shipwrecks and artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Our team filmed over the course of 2 weeks at dive sites off the Gulf. We modified an underwater housing unit to safely hold 6 cameras in deep water. The project’s key VR experience is of the sunken aircraft carrier, the USS Oriskany. It is the world’s largest artificial reef but with it being located 22 miles off shore and resting 215 feet underwater, it can be challenging to see even for divers. We made it accessible to all by filming the shipwreck in 360 VR and showcasing its rarely seen world rich in biodiversity.
