In a multi-year commemoration beginning in 2017, Virginia highlighted its key role in 400 years of U.S. history through the 2019 Commemoration: American Evolution. Featuring programs, education and events of national and international significance, the 2019 Commemoration: American Evolution, inspired participants to engage in the themes of democracy, diversity, and opportunity.

This interactive web documentary preserves the legacy of the 2019 Commemoration: American Evolution for future generations by encouraging the exploration of the past from multiple points of view. It examines the pivotal and lesser-known stories that founded and strengthened democracy, diversity, and opportunity. Moments in history are explored through archeological objects, art, and music as well as the voices of historians, politicians, archaeologists, winemakers, fellow citizens, and activists of all ages.
