Shenandoah National Park

Interpretive Film, Multi-Seasonal Field Production

Orange Frame Productions produced Shenandoah National Park’s new interpretive film, Shenandoah, now screening at the park’s visitor centers and available on their YouTube channel.

Five years in the making, the film explores a rare and ancient wilderness in constant transition, shaped by thousands of interwoven life cycles. With exclusive access to film anywhere within the park, our team scuba dived into mountain caves to film the miraculous voyage of the American eel, climbed cliff faces for the globe-spanning migration of the peregrine falcon, and found the elusive and endangered Shenandoah salamander that’s only known to live on two mountainsides -- astonishing vantage points audiences could not witness on their own.

Amidst post-production of the NPS interpretive film in October 2023, Jeff Boedeker, the film’s writer and director, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 41. The OFP team worked to complete the NPS interpretive film in his honor. Today, the 24-minute film screens multiple times a day at Shenandoah National Park’s visitor centers, reaching over a million visitors every year.

OFP is producing a 1-hour VPM/PBS version of this film in memory of Jeff, who pursued a mission to envelop viewers in the breathtaking world around us, allowing audiences to feel a part of something much bigger than themselves.
